My first 10 years as a Salem fan

You can blame Crown Princess Victoria.  And Måns Zelmerlöw.

The celebrations to mark Victoria's 40th birthday two days ago took me right back in time, 10 years to be exact.  Regular readers are probably bored with this story, but I love to tell it anyway :)

Back in July 2007, I found out that there was a concert, which I could watch on SVT Play, to celebrate the 30th birthday of the Swedish Crown Princess.  At that time I didn't realise that Victoriadagen was an annual event in Sweden, but this concert had caught my attention because Måns was one of the guest performers on the ooncert.  I'd become a fan since his first Melodifestivalen performance in 2007 with "Cara Mia" (pictured below)

Whilst watching the Victoriadagen concert I discovered this very talented young performer called Salem Al Fakir, whom I'd never heard of, but it was one of those rare moments when you know that you have found something very special indeed.

That night didn't just introduce me to the music of a terrific musical talent, but it changed my life.  I wanted to know more and more, and I became a superfan of his music.  I initially wrote about Salem on my other blog, EuropeCrazy, but at the end of 2007 I created Planet Salem as a fanblog for Salem and his music.

Salem's link with the Swedish royal family continued.  He returned to Victoriadagen in 2009, just after the release of the "Astronaut" album.  Later in 2009 he was invited to the Polar Music Prize ceremony to perform Peter Gabriel's "Solsbury Hill".  This ceremony was of course attended by the Swedish royal family!

In 2010, Salem along with Linn Segolson specially wrote a song for the wedding of Crown Princess Victoria to Daniel Westling (now Prince Daniel).  Salem, along with the Segolson siblings Linn and Stefan, performed "All Day Love" at a special gala concert on the evening before the royal wedding. Little did we know that this would be the last "new" song which we would hear from Salem as a solo artist.

If you needed even more proof that Salem was one of the Swedish royal family's favourite artists, then he was back again "by royal appointment" at the wedding of Victoria's brother, Prince Carl Phillip to Sofia Hellqvist (now Princess Sofia) in June 2015.  This time he was performing not one of his own songs, but a cover version of the Coldplay song "Fix You".

A lot has happened in the 10 years since that Victoriadagen concert in 2007.

Victoria is now 40 years old, rather than 30, and she now has 2 children from her marriage to Prince Daniel.  (the above picture is from Victoria's birthday celebrations on 14th July 2017)

Måns Zelmerlöw remained in the spotlight.  He won Melodifestivalen in 2015 and went on to win the Eurovision Song Contest that same year.  When it was Stockholm's turn to host Eurovision, in 2016, Måns co-presented the contest and they were acclaimed by many fans as the best presenters ever at the contest.  Måns continues to release music and play live.

We all know what happened to Salem - since his last new music as a solo artist in 2010, he has gone on to write and produce for many Swedish and international artists, and his vocals have featured on hits from Avicii and Axwell and Ingrosso.  Now Salem has entered an exciting new phase of his musical career, teaming up with that other great Swedish musical talent Vincent Pontare, to form Vargas and Lagola, who have already released some great music in 2017 and promise more to come.

And as for me?  Well, Planet Salem was at its height between 2007 and 2010, those were three crazy and wonderful years which I will never forget.  But now I am 10 years older, and I do not have the energy which I used to have.  My health is not as good as it used to be, and the past couple of years have been a very sad time for me.  However, I continue to love Salem's music - that will never change!  To the next 10 years!  :)

"Sun Is Shining": Vargas and Lagola's version

You will all be familiar with the dance anthem "Sun Is Shining", Salem and Vincent's collaboration with Axwell and Ingrosso from a couple of years ago

Now our favourite duo have released their own version of the song.  Titled "Sun Is Shining (Band of Gold)", the electronic dance beats are swapped for a different, but equally good, guitar-pop sound.

Have a listen to it here:

"More Than You Know" is finally on the way!

It seems to have been around the internet for ever, but Axwell's "More Than You Know" is due to be released in the next few days.  Featuring vocals by Salem and Vincent :))))

"As Long As I Have To": new music by Vargas and Lagola

Hello again everyone!

Vargas and Lagola have released a new song called "As Long As I Have To".  It starts off a little like "Can't Hold Us" by Macklemore and Ryan Lewis but then evolves into a very dreamy classic pop song.  You can listen to it here:

There is also a feature over at the official UK charts site about the duo's new song: http://www.officialcharts.com/chart-news/hit-swedish-songwriting-duo-vargas-lagola-release-new-single-as-long-as-i-have-to-premiere__19198/

Another new piece of music, "Dolores (The Awakening)" has also been released.  It's predominantly an instrumental track which shows off the duo's musical versatility:

These are very exciting times again for Salem and Vincent fans and it looks like there is much, much more to come from this very talented and prolific duo.  This summer I will celebrate 10 years as a Salem fan and it is just wonderful news that he is making music again, along with Vincent, an equally talented artist.

Vargas & Lagola!

Salem is back!  (How did I miss this????)

Meet Vargas & Lagola.

It's a new musical project involving Salem and his songwriting and production collaborator (and equally wonderful artist in his own right) Vincent Pontare.  Their first single is the very catchy "Rolling Stone".  It's a very different sound from Salem's older material but still retains his great talent for a memorable melody.  It's very addictive and you'll just want to keep playing it again and again!

Salem in Nassim's YouTube vlog

Hello again everyone!

Although this is from a couple of months ago, I discovered it today and just wanted to share it in case you hadn't seen it yet.  Salem's brother Nassim has a YouTube vlog and in this episode Salem makes an appearance.  As usual you can expect lots of crazy fun from Nassim as he also goes behind the scenes at Nyhetsmorgon and there are little Alcazar clips here as well.

Salem's songwriting success in 2015

The Music Business Worldwide website reports that Salem was the second most successful songwriter in Sweden last year.  Avicii was top of the list, and Salem was joint second with Vincent Pontare for their work on "Waiting For Love" (Avicii), "Sun Is Shining"/"On My Way" (Axwell / \ Ingrosso) and "Divine Sorrow" (Wyclef Jean/Avicii)

For more information go to http://www.musicbusinessworldwide.com/avicii-and-tove-lo-beat-max-martin-in-list-of-swedens-biggest-songwriters/

Congratulations once again Salem!

Another Grammis nomination for Salem

Along with Vincent Pontare, Magnus Lidehäll and Seinabo Sey, Salem has been nominated in the best composer category at this year's Swedish Grammis awards which will take place on Wednesday 24th February.

This nomination is of course for their work on Seinabo's album "Pretend", which has also been nominated for best album, whilst Seinabo has a nomination for best artist and best pop.  I have a good feeling that she is going to do very well at these awards.

Magnus is also nominated in the best producer category, whilst I also want to mention that two songs co-written by Salem and Vincent are also nominated in the best song category: "Waiting For Love" by Avicii, and "Sun Is Shining" by Axwell and Ingrosso, the latter which also featured the vocals of Salem and Vincent.

Good luck to all of you at the awards!

Seinabo Sey and Salem at the 2015 Nobel Banquet

Salem made a rare live appearance recently, at the 2015 Nobel Banquet in Stockholm, accompanying Seinabo Sey on piano.  Seinabo (above) performed "Poetic".

It's been another very successful year for Salem and his songwriting/producing "dream team", Magnus Lidehäll and Vincent Pontare.  Together they co-wrote, produced and played on Seinabo's debut album "Pretend".  I'm really surprised that she is not a worldwide star by now - but at least she has received a lot of critical acclaim over the past couple of years in the UK and USA.  I found this recent article on The Guardian's website, where Salem also gets a mention.

http://www.theguardian.com/music/2015/dec/01/scandipop-mabel-zhala-seinabo-sey

Seinabo's "Hard Time" did turn up in a TV ad this year for a Mercedes car - which brings back some happy memories of Salem's "It's Only You" being used in the Volvo ad in 2008 :)

Belated happy birthday wishes!

No, I didn't forget that it was Salem's birthday yesterday, but I didn't have the opportunity to get on the blog yesterday to post my annual happy birthday message.

Salem - I hope you had a wonderful birthday and that the coming year is a very happy one for you!

Salem - by royal appointment (again)!

Over the past few years Salem has been a big favourite of the Swedish royal family, appearing at Crown Princess Victoria's birthday concert in 2007 and 2009, and then at a concert on the evening before Victoria's wedding to Daniel Westling in 2010, Salem memorably performed "All Day Love" which was specially written for the occasion.

On Saturday the wedding of Sweden's Prince Carl Philip and Sofia Hellqvist took place in Stockholm and the happy couple had a very special wedding singer at their ceremony - the one and only Salem! Dressed in a black suit, shirt and tie, he performed a lovely version of Coldplay's "Fix You".

When it comes to wedding singers, the Swedish royal family certainly have excellent taste :))

Avicii's new song - "Waiting For Love"

If "Monday left you broken" then this should cheer you up!  Here is the new song by Avicii, which is called "Waiting For Love".  The song was co-written by Salem and Vincent along with Avicii, Martin Garrix and Simon Aldred.  As usual the vocalist has not been credited on the song but is believed to be Simon Aldred who is the lead singer of the band Cherry Ghost.

The lyrics are uplifting and optimistic and it sounds like another big hit for Avicii!

"Sun Is Shining" featured in H&M TV ad

Last night I was watching television and the latest ad for H&M came on during the ad break.  The new ad features some very famous supermodels, modelling the Swedish clothes giant's latest range of swimwear.  So why am I mentioning this on Planet Salem?  The music of course!  Because the soundtrack music happens to be "Sun Is Shining" by Axwell & Ingrosso featuring Salem on vocals. This song has been around the internet for a long time but looks to be finally getting a full release soon, so hopefully it will become a massive worldwide summer hit.

You can see the full version of the commercial at https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=HZ3aArrtQdQ (although it was a much shorter version which appeared on TV).

Go tell everyone under the sun, I'm on my way

Salem's collaboration with Axwell and Ingrosso, "On My Way" has been around the internet for a few months now.  The song was recently released in Sweden and is currently in the iTunes top 30 singles chart, although there is no sign of a UK release date as yet.

In this article http://www.hmv.com/music/axwell-ingrosso-give-an-update-on-the-progress-of-their-debut-album the guys explained that they are still working on their album which should be released later this year.  I was particularly excited to read that Salem and Vincent Pontare will be the featured vocalists on this album, rather than any 'big' name collaborations.  I am delighted to see Axwell and Ingrosso supporting their fellow Swedish artists, particularly two as talented as Salem and Vincent.

When the album is released I will review it on Planet Salem of course :)

Can it really be five years???

I was just looking at the calendar and remembered that five years ago this weekend, we were in Gothenburg to see Salem play an unforgettable concert with the Gothenburg Symphony Orchestra at the Konserthuset (review at http://planetsalem.blogspot.co.uk/2010/03/my-review-salem-al-fakir-gothenburg.html)

I can't believe that those five years have passed so quickly...

I have some very good news to report tonight! Salem and Pontus de Wolfe, along with Glada Hudikteatern have taken home the Årets barnalbum award for ”Trollkarlen från Oz” at the Swedish Grammis 2015.

Congratulations to Salem, Pontus and Glada Hudik on receiving this award - well done!!

Happy birthday!

Another year, another birthday...it seems no time since the last one, but it's that time again!

So, happy birthday Salem!  Have a great time :)

Axwell & Ingrosso - "On My Way"

The Swedish House Mafia may have split up, but the good news is that Axwell and Ingrosso will continue to work together and make new music.  Here's a very pleasant surprise - Axwell and Ingrosso premiered a new song last week at the Governor's Ball in New York.  The song is called "On My Way" and there are some live recordings of the song available on the internet.  You can find one of them here: http://www.edmtunes.com/2014/06/axwell-ingrosso-debut-new-tracks-at-the-governors-ball-festival/

Anyway, the big news for us Salem fans is that the song features Salem on lead vocals - and it sounds like a real summer smash hit!
