There is a review of last night's opening concert of Salem's tour in Lund, in Expressen: http://www.expressen.se/noje/recensioner/konsert/1.1522397/uppklatt-och-sakert-men-utan-det-subtila
The reviewer Per Hägred reported on the return of "Huddinge's Elton John" who played to a crowd of 350 people last night. The reviewer said that the music is now more elegant and subtle, and Salem no longer runs around the way he used to. However, the reviewer commented that in the live setting, the new songs lost their subtlety and at times the band were drowning Salem out :( Apparently the sound quality wasn't as good as it should have been - why is this always a problem at concerts?
I was glad to see that Salem played the unreleased and utterly gorgeous "Brooklyn Sun".
The reviewer said that the best moment was "It's True" which almost blew the roof off the venue!!
(I wonder if Salem played many of the "old" songs? As long as "Good Song" and "Dream Girl" are still in the set then I'll be happy - but I love the new and unreleased songs so I want to hear as many of them as possible!!)

Norwegian review, Gilbert O'Sullivan, and Salem's fans' ages...
1: Another Norwegian review
In Livecity Magazine http://www.livecity.no/Anmeldelse/?p=BlogDetail&ublid=2995, reviewer Jon Vidar Bergen awards the album 6 out of 10.
"In the sequel he is now Salem and he has moved much from (the debut album's) old soul and Stevie Wonder-style. This is more straight and well-arranged pop music, still with a lot of keyboards....First single "Astronaut", which is great, catchy pop with stunning vocals.... Almost as good is "One Of The Others." On "Now's The Time", he unusually rocks à la Oasis, without forgetting the good melody. "Roxy" is inventive pop of the best 70s style (Toto, 10cc, Supertramp). Astronaut is a more varied album than the debut, but unfortunately, not better."
The reviewer recommends the album if you're a fan of Jason Mraz, and...Gilbert O'Sullivan.
2: Gilbert O'Sullivan
The Gilbert comparison is very interesting: whenever I've played Salem's music to anyone of my age group or older than me, they have all commented on the similarity of Salem's style to Gilbert O'Sullivan - if you're not familiar with Gilbert, he was a hugely successful singer-songwriter in the early 1970s (my childhood years!! :o), he wrote and sang very catchy piano-songs with extremely clever lyrics.
I don't know if Salem is familiar with Gilbert O'Sullivan's music or not, but it's interesting to see the reviewers also making this comparison.
3: Age of Salem's fans?
With only two weeks to go till I'm at Salem's Gothenburg concert, I'm beginning to wonder if me and my partner will be the oldest people in the audience!! It's interesting to see that Salem's music appeals to a much younger audience in Sweden, whereas I feel that in the UK he would probably appeal to the over-30s, as a lot of young people over here are only interested in r'n'b, dance music or emo-style bands and are too narrow minded to appreciate real talent. I'm glad that there are young people in Sweden with good musical taste, but I hope there are maybe some older people (30-40s age) going to his live concerts too!!

Swedish charts update
In this week's Sverige Topplistan chart, "Astronaut" (single) has climbed one place to no. 34. Meanwhile the "Astronaut" album has dropped from no. 7 to no. 21. I'm very disappointed about this of course, but I'm sure it will climb the chart again soon.

Salem's tour starts tomorrow!!
For anyone who didn't already know, Salem's tour of Sweden starts tomorrow night at AF Borgen in Lund.
During the tour, I thought it would be a good idea to have a separate post for every concert where you can leave your comments, setlists, and anything you want to say about the show. All comments will be very welcome :) It's ok if you want to leave comments in Swedish - these are welcome too ! :)
These posts will begin tomorrow.
Salem...if you are reading this...Lycka till på turnén och jag hoppas att det går bra för dig och din underbara bandet. Vi ses i Göteborg!!

Yet one more Norwegian review of "Astronaut"
I didn't think I'd find any more reviews, but then I found this in Stavanger Aftenbladet: http://www.aftenbladet.no/kultur/plate/1009070/Hakket_svakere_enn_sist.html
The reviewer Kjetil Wold doesn't like this album as much as "This Is Who I Am" giving it four out of five rather than the five he gave that debut, but even if he's a little critical he's still got lots of good things to say about the album:
"Salem still has a solid grip on songwriting and he alternates from large ballads, through pop, cheesy discopop and soul to flimsy electronica-pop. But he sounds smoother and more superficial this time...it does not mean that "Astronaut" is a bad disc. The melodies are good - and he demonstrates a stronger grip on the ballads than the uptempo pop song. Best tracks: "Black Sun, Black Moon" and "Astronaut."

Curiosity time again...
Now regular readers will know that from time to time I get a little bit curious on this blog and I guess it's that time again.
We know that Salem was in New York in February, and we know he posted that little video clip on YouTube. Anyway tonight I was thinking a little bit about the caption on the video: "Salem fooling around on one of the Euphoria Studios upright pianos prior to working".
Well I just wondered what he was working on? Rehearsing? Recording demos maybe?
As usual....if anyone knows anything about this, please post a comment. ;)

Salem at Nokia launch in Stockholm, and another couple of great album reviews
Last night Salem played at the press launch of Nokia's new 5800 Comes With Music phone. The event was held in the Ambassadeur club in Stockholm, and Emilia and Marit Bergman also appeared at this event. Kulturbloggen has a video clip of Salem and his band performing the wonderful "Roxy" - check it out at http://kulturbloggen.com/?p=8175.
There is a fabulous 5 out of 5 review of "Astronaut" by Sven Ove Bakke in Norwegian newspaper Dagbladet:
http://www.dagbladet.no/2009/03/31/kultur/musikkanmeldelser/musikk/salem_al_fakir/5550541/
I liked it so much I've translated some of it as follows:
"From the Toto-replica "Roxy" via a retro futuristic twist on a Graham Nash / David Crosby-thing ("Bluest Eyes") to soul, funk, airy pop and even some lively rockers. "Now's The Time" could be a new Oasis song, had it not been that the refrain is more catchy than most from the last ten years. It smells mostly of the 80s, but Salem, illustrates that decade's sound with significant roots in the present. Even the most obvious pastiche (Toto song) has contemporary depth ...For you everything is possible. You can create things and you are 100 percent natural."
Back to Sweden, and Eskilstuna-Kuriren's Mikael Barani loves "Astronaut" too. Read the review at http://ekuriren.se/kulturnoje/1.7235 and again I thought it was worth a translation so here's some of the review:
"A sequel to Salem's acclaimed debut "This Is Who I Am" will receive the ovation and cheers also. Astronaut is an incredibly ambitious album, filled with both large and intimate moments to look back on the 60s, 70s and 80s. ...."Bluest Eyes...feels like an updated Riders on the Storm by The Doors, with a message about having a critical attitude to the broadcast on our televisions....Salem's voice carries a kind of vulnerability...and represents a large part of the magic of "Astronaut". In the orchestral "Purple Lady", Salem's ability to create with his voice a warm atmosphere....the journey here has been revolutionary".
So here we are at the end of March. What a fabulous month it has been, which began with the release of the "Astronaut" single and Salem's appearance on Popcirkus...and ended with the "Astronaut" album receiving universal critical acclaim and commercial success in Sweden.
And what will April bring?.....Salem on tour!!

Salem on Mix Megapol radio today
Salem appeared on Mix Megapol radio's "Antligen Morgon" today, and sang "Brooklyn Sun" live. There is a video clip of his wonderful performance at http://www.mixmegapol.se/program/antligen-morgon/livemusik-i-studion
I've said it before and I'm going to say it again: this is possibly the most beautiful song that Salem has ever written, and it would melt even the hardest heart.

"Astronaut" has climbed up to no. 29 in this week's Swedish Radio P3 Digilistan singles chart.

"Astronaut" review in ABC Nyheter (Norway)
A long and detailed review by Johnny Andreassen, headed "Extraordinary pop".
The album gets 5 out of 6 and the reviewer says "This is the sound of pop with a large P for the year 2009".
"Much may suggest that he is an Elton John or Roger Hodgson of our time... pop music as effortless should appeal to 13-year-olds as well as 70-year-olds... you feel all the way there is a slight twist of genius that has roots in his identity as a musician. Pop with a soul feeling that Prince could reel off in his warmest moments".
The reviewer concludes: "Searching your soul a good pop with piano-based drama, you need not look further than just over the border. "Astronaut" comes to stand as one of the best pure pop albums in 2009...No hesitation - both thumbs up for Salem Al Fakir!"
And who could disagree? The review (in Norwegian) can be found at http://www.abcnyheter.no/node/86085

Salem to play Karlstad on 27.07.09
Varmlands Folkblad reports here: http://www.vf.se/Kultur--Noje/Noje/Allsang-och-konserter-i-Mariebergsskogen-090328.aspx that Salem will play Mariebergsskogen in Karlstad on 27th July. I'm sure some more summer concerts will be announced soon - and I wonder if he will play any summer festivals?

My Gothenburg countdown: three weeks to go!!!
Three weeks from today I will be getting on a plane and flying all the way over to Gothenburg and then three weeks from tomorrow I will be going to Salem's concert at Trädgår'n on 18th April.
I don't want to bore you all about this as I know you visit this site to read about Salem and not about me, but you know how much this means to me and I'm so excited about seeing him play live.
I've been talking to my friends about Planet Salem and my forthcoming trip and they seem quite fascinated by it all. Some of them have asked me if I will get to meet Salem.
I told them that of course I would love to meet Salem, but it would be his decision if he wanted to meet the person who runs his international fansite..!
Anyway this brings me to a reminder about something which I missed earlier. There is a competition at http://www.salemalfakir.com/tavling/ which Swedish fans can enter and win tickets for one of Salem's concerts in April and also get the opportunity to meet him. The closing date for the competition is 29th March.
Maybe Salem could invent a competition for me to win so that I could meet him!!! :)

Damernas Varld review of "Astronaut"
If you go to http://www.damernasvarld.se/damernas/koll/musik/2009/salem-al-fakir-astronaut/index.xml there is a short review, by Linda Nordeman, which like most of the other reviews I've already mentioned has been very positive.
"In "Astronaut" Salem lands his rocket into Prince's 80s-charming "Roxy" to later take the direction of shimmering pop-classical symphony with the orchestral-arranged "Purple Lady". With a backpack stuffed with recognisable influences and ....exciting productions in which texts move between seriousness and humour".

Interview at Groove.se
There's a short but very interesting interview with Salem at the following link: http://www.groove.se/site/artikel.asp?artId=491
I've done a brief translation of some highlights of the interview here, as I thought you might like to read it.
Louise Olsson interviewed Salem at his signing session at Bengans in Gothenburg last week. In the interview, Salem said that he wanted to change his hairstyle, and that he's become more calmer as he's got older. He also said where there were a lot of old songs on the first album, it's all new songs on the second album.
Salem also said that people abroad - particularly English speakers - found it difficult to pronounce his surname so he decided just to shorten it to Salem on the second album. Although Salem wants to succeed abroad, he said it's not the main focus right now and sees it as a "side project".
Salem said that not all the songs on the album are about him, but they are about things he has observed.

Swedish charts update...
"Astronaut" entered the Swedish album chart at no.7 today, whilst the "Astronaut" single has climbed to no. 35.
I don't know how Salem feels about that no. 7, but I'm a bit disappointed as I thought it deserved to go in at no.1. Second highest new entry isn't too bad though, and - remember this is only my opinion! - "Astronaut" will probably have a longer album chart run than that of this week's no.1 Caroline af Ugglas, as I reckon this is only doing well on the back of her Melodifestivalen success.
Anyway...it's still good news.
If you haven't bought the album yet then you need to buy it as it is utterly fantastic!! If you live outside Sweden you can buy it from the various websites listed on Salem's official site and his MySpace, I'd recommend www.cdon.com as this is where I got my copy from.

Album chart revealed tomorrow...
I can't wait till the Sverige Topplistan album chart is revealed tomorrow. Where will "Astronaut" enter the chart? (Hopefully at number one....fingers crossed!!)
After all the excitement of the past week, it's all gone quiet on the news front but if I hear anything I will report it on Planet Salem of course!!
Salem - have a good weekend, you need to have a good rest before before the tour starts next week. Take care! :)

Uppsala Nya Tidning's review of "Astronaut"
During my round-up last week I missed this one and only found it tonight: it's another 4 out of 5 review by Ulf Gustavsson and there are some very nice comments made in this review and I liked it.
"...it is easy to capitulate to Salem Al Fakir's great melodic pop...exciting for the ear, and extremely clever". Full review at http://www.untfredag.se/avd/1,1826,MC=15-AV_ID=885259,00.html

"Astronaut" review at Corren.se
Yet another positive four-star review at http://www.corren.se/archive/2009/3/25/k5qcr9lu5ov3x41.xml
"moving freely and unhindered in an open pop landscape...an 80's west coast vibe that is reminiscent of Toto and Chicago. To pick the best out of a slick genre without becoming dull and boring is an achievement".

Expressen interview
With all the news and reviews over last weekend I'd forgotten to mention Salem's nice new interview in Expressen - find it at http://www.expressen.se/noje/1.1503588/raknar-med-att-sagas
In this interview, Salem says "for me, it is important to be a good person". Which just proves once again that Salem is so "down to earth" and is not affected by his success or critical acclaim.

New Nokia promotion.
If you live in Sweden, go to http://www.tubemusic.se/ for details of a competition in connection with the Nokia 5800 mobile phone. The eventual winner will win a private concert by Salem at their very own home (this is probably the best prize ever!).
Norwegian press review of "Astronaut"
Rune Slyngstad in Avisa Nordland describes the album as "...a new round of dynamic and varied pop inspired by 70s names like 10CC, Supertramp and Toto" He calls the title track "...a great song. Many of the ten other songs also show a creative popman searching and looking for exciting solutions that are not common in 2009".

Swedish Charts Update
"Astronaut" (single) has climbed to no.37 in SR P3's "Digilistan" today, whilst as Salem has already revealed, he is at no. 9 in the "Tracks" chart - as usual, keep on voting!
"Astronaut" reviews round-up, part 2
Here are some more short translations of/links to various Swedish press reviews of the album which have generally been very positive.
Västerbottens Folkblad’s Niclas Holmlund describes "Astronaut" as "a musical journey: an exciting, varied and interesting one and Al Fakir is an extremely resourceful and knowledgeable guide...an astronaut in his own orbit" I would recommend that you read/translate this review as Mr Holmlund seems to perfectly describe the album, which he gives 4 out of 5.
Review at http://www.folkbladet.nu/?p=139732
Anders Dahlbom in Expressen calls it "a melodic space trip back to the 70s... Salem has not lost the ability to write songs that sounds annoying little melodic old hits...contagious choruses and shamelessly wonderful commercial production, so it smells like success again". (So why did you only give it 3 out of 5?) Review at http://www.expressen.se/noje/recensioner/skivor/1.1505811/melodisk-rymdtripp-tillbaka-till-70-talet
Aftonbladet’s Jenny Seth gives it 4 out of 5. She stated that there is a major difference in the music from the last album, listing influences such as Elton John, Paul Simon and the Zombies (I know what she means about "Bluest Eyes") and she feels that this album is "tighter and better than it’s predecessor...although some may miss the effervescent joy from the first album, the new music is just like Salem’s new hairdo - simply attractive". Review at
http://www.aftonbladet.se/nojesbladet/musik/recensioner/article4703197.ab
NWT’s Lina Hard also awards 4 out of 5 but isn’t too happy with the "... less than cheerful manner. It is innovative and with a different gravity, but we should not lose the joy". She highlights however that "...Salem has developed and dares to try new paths in music. The songs feel like the haircut he wants, not the one everyone else wants him to have...Salem IS a musical genius". Who could disagree? Review at http://nwt.se/noje/skivor/article500613.ece
Ludvig Blix in Gefle Dagblad is another reviewer with a 4 out of 5 rating: "predictable retro-pop, neatly arranged and melodically brilliant...Salem walks completely unhindered through 1960s, 70s and 80s music." The reviewer also notes "this disc has the potential to hit internationally, every song has both hitpotential and depth", his only criticism is that "he is not the least original...he is a genius, but without his own expression". (Planet Salem will disagree....Salem is a true original in every way!!) Review at

Arbetarbladet’s Christine Oden awards 3 out of 5 and says "It is a mature Salem who reveals himself in the sequel to "This is who I am"... several songs lean strongly to something that closely resembles stadium rock...but still fine melodies and beautiful arrangements". I think most of the reviews have now been published: however I will keep looking out for new interviews and magazine articles and as usual, if any of you hear anything...please let me know!!

Salem's new song...
There is footage on YouTube of Salem singing a new song in Bengans in Stockholm yesterday. I now know it is called "Brooklyn Sun", it is such a lovely song that you should check it out. I hope he releases this song at some point as it is just beautiful.
Come, come, come back soon
I would trade away the stars and moon
If you came, came, came back soon
My darker days would all be done
Oh Brooklyn sun....

Salem on TV4's Nyhetsmorgon today
If you missed this, don't worry - there are now clips from this morning's show if you go to http://www.tv4.se/samhalle/nyhetsmorgon. Salem sang "Bluest Eyes" and "Astronaut" and there was also a nice short interview.
Isn't it great to see him appearing on lots of Swedish TV shows to promote the album!

Lyrics now available on Salem's website
I know a lot of you are looking for the lyrics of Salem's new songs...well he's published them on his official website. If you go to www.salemalfakir.com then click on 'Discography' and follow the links to the lyrics for each song on "Astronaut".
I notice that some of these lyrics are slightly different from those in the actual songs so maybe Salem changed his mind along the way!
Now you can all learn the lyrics - I already know them off by heart :)

Astronaut: my review

The postman finally delivered my copy of the album yesterday and I’ve been listening to it non-stop since then!
The first thing you notice is that he’s no longer Salem Al Fakir, just ‘Salem’: the clearest indication yet that an international career is finally in sight (without anyone worrying how to pronounce his surname, and to avoid the narrow-minded attitudes of those sick and stupid people who may have a negative view of the origins of his surname).
On the CD cover, which I’d describe as ‘enigmatic’ Salem appears unrecognisable. However, when you put the CD on, you will get that reassuring feeling that despite any change in his look/name/musical style/songwriting themes, he is still distinctively....Salem.
Just like his debut album all songs are written, produced and arranged by Salem himself and he still mainly plays most instruments but this time he’s also involved members of his band on some of the songs too. (Check out the album sleeve notes for more info).
Much as I love "This Is Who I Am", the lyrics on that album were maybe a little bit simplistic in places. Salem has clearly developed as a lyricist since that time and his lyrics have improved so much. What we have to remember is that Salem is not a native English speaker yet he now writes as if he was one!
There is the well-known "difficult second album syndrome" which many artists suffer from, they can’t follow up a successful debut and the result is inevitable failure and disappointment.
Happily, Salem has managed to avoid this and has created an album which is more cohesive than the experimental "This Is Who I Am" - there are no instrumental interludes this time, for example - but it’s no less diverse; no two songs sound the same. My only criticism of this album is that it’s too short! A couple more songs would have been nice, or am I just being greedy now? :))
Anyway here is my track by track review, based on my listening to the album over the past 24 hours.
Anyway here is my track by track review, based on my listening to the album over the past 24 hours.
Track 1: "Cold Shower"
"I thought I was the greatest one/of course I wasn’t".
"I thought I was the greatest one/of course I wasn’t".
The result is a very impressive opening track and it’s not surprising that it is already very popular with critics and fans alike. Salem plays all instruments on this song. I like the clarity of the production which brings Salem’s voice to the forefront.
Track 2: "Astronaut"
"I understood what she was up to/it was planned from the beginning and the plan was carried through/and I’m still in the middle"
The major change/development in Salem as an artist, for me, is the emotional depth which has come into his singing and songwriting since the last album.
The title track (and second single) is just beautiful. On this track, there is such sadness, emotion and regret in Salem’s voice that you can’t fail to be moved by it. At about 1:30 into the song there is a little moment where it stops and starts again ("...she left him to be with me") and that particular moment always gets me every time.

At about 1:30 into the song there is a little moment where it stops and starts again ("...she left him to be with me") and that particular moment always gets me every time.
The best thing about Salem’s songs is that you can listen to them over and over and over again but you will never get tired of them: "Astronaut" is yet another example of that.
Track 3: "Now’s The Time"
"It’s beautiful/every little step they take"
"It’s beautiful/every little step they take"
I’ve known this song for a few months thanks to YouTube summer concert footage and I originally thought it was called "Beautiful". Anyway this is another completely different sound for Salem - the bassline and guitars always remind me of Kula Shaker (remember them?), and I keep thinking he’s going to go into "Hush" (!)
No matter what musical style he takes on, Salem never sounds out of place, and on this song he manages to succeed yet again.
Track 4: "It’s Only You (Part II)"
"If you ever will be mine....I will never ever let you down".
Track 4: "It’s Only You (Part II)"
"If you ever will be mine....I will never ever let you down".
The first single released from this album. Not so much a re-recording of the original album track from "This Is Who I Am", more of a reinvention, although it still remains a beautiful and uplifting song. Much has been written about the ‘new’ Salem - how he’s cut his hair, dropped his surname and gone all "serious". What hasn’t changed is his unique ability to create music which makes you feel happy to be alive.
This song still sounds as fresh, wonderful and inspiring as it was the first time I heard it, and thanks to its use in the Volvo XC60 commercial has introduced Salem’s music to a wider international audience.
Track 5: "Roxy"
"I feel a burning sensation/in the region below"
"I feel a burning sensation/in the region below"
Some other reviewers have suggested the massive summer-hit potential of this song, which will probably be his next single. This song musically transports you back to about 1984 (!), and the lyrics are very interesting indeed. I initially had about five different possible interpretations of what this song is about, but now I think I know - let’s just say it’s a very "infectious" song ;))
I could see this song being a hit in Britain because of our fondness for 80s music nostalgia, but I can imagine the British radio censorship police having a problem with some of the lyrics!! This song always makes me smile though, it’s cheeky, naughty and great fun. It will definitely become a favourite at Salem’s live concerts.
Track 6: "Bluest Eyes"
"We better all watch out/evil is hiding in the bluest eyes"
"We better all watch out/evil is hiding in the bluest eyes"
I only heard this (and "Cold Shower") for the first time last week when Salem played live on Swedish Radio and immediately I was hooked. Atmospheric, with an almost early 70s laid back rock sound to it.
The lyrics are darker than what we’ve previously been used to, but it’s most certainly not a depressing song: instead it’s extremely melodic, with a very memorable chorus. This immediately became one of my favourite tracks on the album and I just know it will become one of my most played songs.
I think that this song could surprise a lot of people who may not be fans of Salem’s music.
Track 7: "Twelve Fingers"
"For how long have you planned to hold me back?/I almost lost it but now I’m back on track/Hey!".
"For how long have you planned to hold me back?/I almost lost it but now I’m back on track/Hey!".
I cheered when I found out this was on the album as it had previously got a limited release on the "It’s Only You (Part II)" EP but as this wasn’t released everywhere, many fans missed out so I’m happy it didn’t get lost after all. This is one of my favourite songs and I never get tired of hearing it.
Musically it gallops along to a driving rock beat; lyrically it’s quite funny and nice. The "twelve fingers in the cookie jar" line can’t fail to make you smile. A great song to jump around and sing along to - please play this on your forthcoming tour Salem!
Track 8: "Purple Lady"
"It’s time for me to go/but I wanna play some more/can I stay until tomorrow morning?"
"It’s time for me to go/but I wanna play some more/can I stay until tomorrow morning?"
This is a live recording from last November’s Berwaldhallen concerts with the Swedish Radio Symphony Orchestra. It has the same sweet lullaby-quality as "Hymn" from the first album, only this is on a much bigger scale. Pretty, and moving, and sweet. The orchestral arrangement is amazing too.
Like "Hymn", this immediately makes me think of film soundtrack music. This definitely points towards Salem doing film soundtracks at some point later in
his career: I’m sure he would excel at this.
(I particularly love this song for the stupid reason that purple is my favourite colour, and I want to wear something purple when I go to Salem’s concert as a kind of tribute!)
Track 9: "Mirror"
"It’s all in a big blur"
I first heard this last summer when the usual phone-footage from Salem’s summer concerts found its way to YouTube. The lyrics are playful and funny, I’d guess that they are about looking back on a wild night out and trying to remember what happened ...lyrics that I’m sure many will relate to.
At the moment "Mirror" is my least favourite track on the album, only because I don’t like it as much as all the other songs, but I still like it though if you know what I mean!
Track 10: "One of the Others"
"They all stand in line, waiting for you to make up your mind"
"They all stand in line, waiting for you to make up your mind"
Absolutely, without any doubt, my favourite song on this album. I first heard this song on YouTube after Berwaldhallen and immediately it became a classic for me. An uptempo piano-based song with some very clever lyrics. It’s an outstanding and timeless song which could have belonged anywhere in the last 30 years - and I say that as a compliment.
This sounds a bit stupid and hard to explain, but the first time I heard this song I was moved to tears even though it’s delivered in such a happy uptempo way. Then I realised it was not because I was upset in any way, they were tears of happiness at hearing something so fantastic. This song absolutely soars above anything else on this album, I guess it’s the point where "old" and "new" Salem collide and the result is four minutes of complete magic.
Track 11: "Black Sun Black Moon"
"It’s time to tell the world/a true angel is gone"
"It’s time to tell the world/a true angel is gone"
This is a demo which Salem recorded at his home studio: it needed to be on this album and personally I think there may have been riots if this had been left off the tracklisting.
The most moving, heartbreaking song that Salem has ever written, filled with
raw emotion. In one of the Swedish press interviews this week, Salem was asked about this song but found it too painful to talk about it (Someone once told me what it was about, but I won’t go into detail here, with respect to Salem). If you are not moved by this song then you have no heart or soul.
The verdict:
With "This Is Who I Am" and now "Astronaut", Salem Al Fakir has already created a body of work which more established and experienced artists can only look on and envy.
Salem is an artist who has been blessed with a unique and special talent: "Astronaut" is a diverse, ambitious, rewarding and timeless collection of songs.
Thank you, Salem, for sharing them with us.
Rating: 10 out of 10 !!!

Salem on SVT2's "Hype" tonight
If you missed this tonight don't worry, because you can see it at http://svtplay.se/t/102939/hype. Salem's interview starts about 7 minutes into the show and then he's back again later.
Of course my knowledge of spoken Swedish is virtually zero so I didn't really understand any of it...so if anyone could translate what he said in the interview then I would really appreciate this :)))
It was very nice to watch though......I think you will all agree.
Meanwhile if you search over at YouTube you'll find video footage of Salem doing a little classical musical collaboration with REBaroque, which is a trailer for Axess TV's "Det Handlar Om Musik" tomorrow at 20:00. Yet more evidence of Salem's absolute musical versatility.

Astronaut: release day round-up
Unfortunately I wasn't around tonight to post all the news/reviews, so sorry if they're late but here we go...
Fredrik Fischer in Trelleborgs Allehanda gives the album 3 out of 5, describing it as "a disc full of surprises...the only really bad thing in comparison with the music's high-level are the embarrassing lyrics". (Sorry Mr Fischer but I can't agree with this one - Salem's lyric writing has really matured based on the songs I've heard so far). Full review here.
Nojesguiden next, where Nicholas Ringsk isn't really happy with the album..."nice and pleasant pop songs but nothing more than that". Full review here.
Kristianstadsbladet's Lisa Appelqvist was much more positive, giving the album 4 out of 5. I liked this review - she seems to understand what Salem is all about.."in which a limited number of works reveal the artist's entire width, where no track was similar, and all equal. A musical treasure map for explorers. The only question is if the audience is brave enough to embark on the adventure game. I dare you!" Full review here.
At Allehanda.se it's another 4 out of 5 from Peter Carlsson: "perhaps there is no new "Dream girl" or "Good song", but the sequel is very much more equal in quality than its predecessor. You can see that Salem has taken the time in the studio". He goes on to highlight "Roxy", "It's Only You Part II", "One of the Others" and "Astronaut" as the best tracks. Full review here.
Smålandsposten's Jonas Allgulin only gives the album 2 out of 5: "sequel to the woefully overestimated "This Is Who I Am". But behind the fine title song is the same boring music college soul. The whole is notoriously more important than the parts." Full review here.
There is also a very good new interview at Stockholm City - link here. And not only that, there is a rather nice photo of Salem (by Johan Jeppsson) attached to the article, which I liked so much I wanted to share it with you all here, if that's ok.

Just for a bit of fun I've added a poll to the site so that you can vote for your favourite track on "Astronaut". I'm going to keep this running until the end of May so you've got plenty of time to choose your favourite - you can vote for one, or two, or indeed all of them!!!
(Of course I won't be voting until I've heard all the tracks).

More reviews of "Astronaut" in the Swedish press
Firstly, Carl Cato in Vestmanlands Läns Tidning (link to review here) gives "Astronaut" 3 out of 5. The reviewer admits that he'd never been a fan but acknowledges Salem's talent to write a great pop song, and describes "Roxy" by saying it "could have been written by a 70s-Fleetwood Mac on top form. Salem Al Fakir selects from musical history, creating his own style and wraps it all in an impeccable contemporary sound....written by a master".
Sonic Magazine's Jenny Sörby says that "Astronaut" references "three decades of melodious rock and pop" with influences from Led Zeppelin to Toto to Elton John and Gyllene Tider. The reviewer also suggests that international success would be "perfectly logical" as an international audience could relate to "thirty years of common popular cultural references". She gives the album 5 out of 5 - find this very positive review here.
Mikael Ankarvik in Norra Skåne awards the album 4 out of 5 and highlights "rare broad musicality...embraces many musical genres with influences from the 70s and 80's..." . This reviewer also suggests some comparisons: Gilbert O'Sullivan, Abba, Supertramp, Prefab Sprout and Air. The reviewer concludes that "everything boils down to, however, Salem Al Fakir, a distinct voice". Find the review here.
Some great reviews for the album so far! I'll post links to more reviews when they become available. In the meantime here's a new picture of Salem....(photo courtesy of Scanpix)

It's the final countdown....one day to go!!
I can't believe that the waiting is almost over and "Astronaut" will finally be released tomorrow!!
I thought I'd share with you that Planet Salem received a record number of visitors yesterday so once again thank you all for visiting, I really appreciate it.
We also have an increased amount of visitors from North America. It looks as if the Volvo commercial is now being screened over there, so that will introduce Salem to a whole new audience!

I got an email tonight from CDON which says that delivery is on its way and I should receive my copy of Astronaut in the next few days.
I will try and publish my review on Planet Salem as soon as I can, of course it will all depend on when I receive the CD!! In the meantime I will post links to any reviews which I find on the internet.

"Astronaut" review in Sundsvall Dagbladet
If you go to http://dagbladet.se/kulturnoje/musik/1.847104 you will find a very positive review of the new album. The reviewer, Jens Höglin, notes Salem's musical versatility across the album, highlighting his "infectious melodies, beautiful arrangements and an almost childish musical curiosity". He also compares "Roxy" to an 80s movie soundtrack song (that's a very good comparison I think!) and suggests it could be a big summer hit. The reviewer gives the album 4 out of 5.
I hope there will be many more positive reviews from the Swedish critics!

Find it at http://www.svd.se/kulturnoje/nyheter/webbtv/artikel_2598727.svd. Rather nice version of the song too, he's accompanied by Jakob and Nils on this.
What's the deal with "Someday"? Is it going to be on the album or not? It's never mentioned in any of the published tracklistings, yet if it's not on the album he seems to play it rather a lot. Or maybe it will be on a future EP? Does anyone know the answer? I'm confused!!
EDIT 16.03.09: (Thanks Karl for the answer!) "Someday" won't be on the album. Whilst I'm rather disappointed about this, I have heard a few live versions of the song recently and they've been different every time - this song is certainly a "work in progress" so if Salem wants to experiment and play a few songs live which aren't on the album then it's his choice and at least we get to hear even more songs from him than we would normally expect, so it's all for the better I guess :))
When I got home and logged on tonight I found that Svenska Dagbladet interview (by Erik Laquist) at http://www.svd.se/kulturnoje/nyheter/artikel_2599309.svd Quite a fascinating interview too...it gives an insight into where Salem is "at" just now.
Salem describes his new record as a more mature collection of songs in which he has developed his lyrics and songwriting and doesn't see it as being the typical "difficult second album". He says he is at his most comfortable when playing live - that's certainly good news for all of us who are going to see him on tour.

Salem will be on SVT2's "Hype" this week
Thanks Malin for the tip - Salem will be appearing on this programme on Thursday at 20:00. I'll be checking it out later on SVT Play.
"Astronaut" in Digilistan and Tracks
Salem has mentioned the good news on his website that "Astronaut" entered P3's Tracks chart this week at no.11. Of course you need to keep voting so that the song climbs the chart next week.
"Astronaut" has also entered the Digilistan chart at no.42. It's the very same situation as the Sverige Topplistan, with all those Melodifestivalen songs taking up space in the top half of the chart where Salem should be.
In my own chart, it's number one of course :)

Salem on P4's "Musikplats Stockholm" today
I didn't know this was happening until I went to Salem's official site tonight so it was a really pleasant surprise to find out that Salem and his band had played a live concert session today at P4.
If you go to http://www.sr.se/cgi-bin/stockholm/program/index.asp?ProgramID=746 and read further down the web page there is a link to the half-hour show.
Firstly "Someday" (is this still called "Someday" or is it called something different now?) which has turned into a bluesy little jam. Next was "Cold Shower" which I hadn't heard before. It seemed a little rough around the edges but it's probably one of the first times it's been played live so I guess that's the reason. One of the great things about Salem is that no two songs sound the same - this had a little jazz-influence about it.
EDIT 16.03.09: I've listened to "Cold Shower" several times now and it has really grown on me. I just love the little piano-lines running through it...I can't wait to hear the album-version of this.
"Astronaut" next - well what more can I say? This is already a classic.
And so on to "Bluest Eyes". This was the first time I'd heard this song and I have to say that I love it already. It's very atmospheric and darker in mood ("evil is hiding in the bluest eyes") and it ends in a fabulous guitar solo.
EDIT 16.03.09: I just know that this is going to be one of my favourite tracks on the album. Salem's lyrics have developed so much, and they are now so clever that you actually forget that he is not a native English speaker - but he writes better lyrics than native English speakers!! The instrumental part at the end of the song is stunning: it reminds me of something from the 1970s - I mean that as a compliment by the way!
It's indicative of Salem's "more serious" mood which some fans may not be happy about, however I understand that you can't stay the same all the time, and you have to move on in your musical-life and maybe explore some more serious, darker themes.
But then "Roxy" closes the show, a song which is neither serious nor dark :)) It's frivolous, cheeky, naughty and fun all at the same time. And I love it.
It was great to hear this show tonight and I recommend that you check it out. It will certainly keep me going till my copy of "Astronaut" drops through my letterbox!

Swedish Charts Update
"Astronaut" is a new entry at no.47 in the Sverige Topplistan singles chart this week. It would probably be a lot lot higher if it wasn't for all the Melodifestivalen songs!

Video footage of new interview
I previously mentioned the new interview with Salem: now you can watch the video footage at http://www2.unt.se/UNT_TV/1,4758,,00.html?MC=0&ID=2359 . Salem looks amazing in this video clip, I'm sure you will all agree.
"Astronaut" to be released in Finland next week
Good news for Salem's Finnish fans: EMI Finland reports here that the "Astronaut" album will be released in Finland on 18.03.09.

New interview with Salem in Svenska Dagbladet
Thanks to Sofie for the tip (see comments section in previous post).
There is a new interview with Salem by Camilla Sundell of TT Spektra which is published in today's Svenska Dagbladet (and a number of other Swedish newspapers).
In this interview Salem says that he has developed as a person since his debut album and is happy to be older! He says that he didn't expect "This Is Who I Am" to be so successful and although he was delighted to win 4 Grammy awards he has now put them away in the closet! Salem admits that the "Astronaut" album is more serious and thoughtful but that fans should still be able to recognise his music.
His inspiration for the songs comes from daily events in his life and he says there are always things to write about.
Salem also hopes to collaborate again with the Swedish Radio Symphony Orchestra in future.
Inevitably the conversation turned to Salem's hairstyle! He said that he was happy to get his hair cut as he had wanted that style since he was younger, and he hopes that people will no longer mix him up with his brother Nassim.
Finally, Salem is hoping that the release of his EP in various countries in Europe will lead to a European tour.
Full interview at http://www.svd.se/kulturnoje/nyheter/artikel_2578975.svd
Needless to say, Planet Salem will continue to spread the word about Salem's music all across Europe and beyond, so that hopefully some day his dream of a European tour will come true.

Countdown to "Astronaut"!
...One week to go!! I hope you are all as excited as I am ;))
As usual, if anyone has any news about forthcoming TV/radio appearances to promote the single and album, please let me know.
I read something on the internet last night that a preview of the album will be available to Spotify Premium users, however I'm not sure if this has happened yet, or when it is going to happen. (I think there was a mix-up, something to do with another band which is also called Salem).
Again if anyone has any information about this, please let me know!

This is something bigger you can't live without
If you signed up to Opendisc you will have received an unexpected musical gift today in your inbox: a nice little video and a couple of songs from Salem: "Astronaut" and "The Others" (a.k.a. "One of the Others").
(I like the way he has recorded the video message in his kitchen: it's like another little "Kitchen Session" isn't it!!)
If you heard Salem's Berwaldhallen concert on Swedish Radio on 1 January you will have heard "One of the Others" and you will also have realised just how fantastic it is. The first time I heard it I was so moved by the melody and the arrangement.
I had that same feeling tonight, hearing the recorded version for the first time. I felt so emotional that my eyes were almost filling up with tears of happiness. Lyrically clever and musically upbeat, this song is just so fabulous I can't put it into words. (So I won't even try).
If you haven't signed up to Salem's Opendisc it's still not too late. All you have to do is pop your "This Is Who I Am" CD into your computer whilst you're connected to the internet, follow the Opendisc links and sign up.

Salem on Popcirkus
In case you missed it, Salem sang "It's Only You Part II", "Astronaut" and "Roxy".
He was amazing, wasn't he!! I've got butterflies in my stomach, it was so exciting seeing him again. I thought his band were great too, I notice he's expanded the line-up and now has backing vocalists too - Mats Karlsson was also in his band tonight along with Jesper Lagercrantz.
What about that new song "Roxy" then? It's got that very 1980s Van Halen-"Jump" kind of vibe to it. And what about those rather naughty lyrics!!
Just one more thing...who's Roxy????
I'll write more about this tomorrow as I need to watch it again!! Find it at http://svtplay.se/v/1467649/popcirkus/del_6_av_10 , Salem's interview is about 35 minutes into the show and he's on stage later in the last half hour of the show.
Here's a couple of screencaps from tonight's show.

Countdown to "Astronaut"....
TWO WEEKS TO GO!!!!!
OK it's only two weeks to "Astronaut Day" which I have declared an international day of celebration on this website!! Of course the new single - the title track - is out now!!
Over at Salem's MySpace you can find a list of where to buy the single and album at this link here.
I've just been thinking about how exciting the next few weeks are going to be, and how it will be the absolute high point for Planet Salem. After 15 months of doing this website, I'm so happy that the album is finally on its way. Good things come to those who wait :) Maybe it will get an international release later in the year? As I've said before, if anyone has any information about that, please let me know either by comments or by email.
And then of course, I will be going to Gothenburg to see Salem live. And that's going to get its own little countdown too :)))

Salem on "Popcirkus" tomorrow - post your comments here!
Just to give you plenty of notice, here is yet another reminder that Salem will be appearing on SVT's "Popcirkus" tomorrow night.
If you're in the audience at Debaser tomorrow night, or if you're just watching it on TV, let us know what you thought of his performance and post your comments here!
He should sing about two or three songs and there should also be an interview - I'm sure it will be a great show :)))

A new interview
Go to http://nojesguiden.se/artikel/aterkomsten and you'll find a short but revealing interview about Salem's comeback. I've translated this so hopefully it's ok! (My own comments are in brackets)
In the interview he reveals the difference between recording his first album, for himself, in the basement, and the pressure of a second album which people are waiting to hear. He says that he is still trying to make music which he wants to make, rather than that which he expects others to like. (I'm glad that he continues to be true to himself!)
He also stated that the person putting the most pressure on him is....himself, as he feels he constantly has to prove himself.
Salem said that, like "This Is Who I Am" he has written music and lyrics, recorded and produced the album himself, but has included some friends and also a guest appearance from the Swedish Radio Symphony Orchestra on one track (ooh, which one I wonder? "Purple Lady" or "One of the Others"? I hope!) He described his lyrics as very different and more playful, and the music reflects the happy and sad times he has experienced. He hoped that people would recognise this when listening to the album.
Finally, Salem admits to being a control freak! (And why not! We love him for it, especially if it results in such wonderful music) ;))))

Countdown to "Astronaut"!
...3 weeks to go!!
That's all, I haven't had any other news to report this week but if I'll find anything I'll post it on the site as usual.
In the meantime don't forget there are two very important things happening next Wednesday = one is the release of the "Astronaut" single in Sweden, the other is Salem's appearance on SVT's "Popcirkus". I just realised that this will be his first Swedish TV appearance since last May's "Humorgalan" (correct me if I am wrong) as his other more recent appearances - P3 Guldgalan press conference and Rockbjornen - were internet-only.

"Astronaut" added to Swedish radio P3's playlist
"Astronaut" is now B-listed on Swedish radio P3's playlist, so it should be getting quite a lot of airplay.
I'm still surprised and confused that "It's Only You Part II" didn't do better in the Swedish singles chart. Maybe this was due to the lack of promotion/TV appearances etc? Hopefully "Astronaut" will do much better and Salem will do lots of TV to promote it.....I wonder when we'll get to see the video?

New YouTube footage
There's a clip at http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=YNOmkUYgS3Y of Salem playing 'Someday' on the piano at Euphoria Studios in New York.
Whilst I'm on the subject I had wondered why "Someday" is not on the published tracklisting for the album. I really thought this would have been there, particularly as he played it live recently at the P3 Guldgalan press conference. Does anyone know what's happened to this song?
Salem - can you post more clips like this on YouTube? Some more Kitchen Sessions would be nice, if you're cooking any more falukorv :))

Gothenburg here I come!!!!
Yes I've finally booked my tickets, flights and hotel and I'm coming over to see Salem in concert in Gothenburg!!!!
Words can't describe how happy I am tonight - but you can imagine!!
Now Planet Salem can get back to writing about what Salem is up to, rather than what I'm up to :)))))

Some good news (Gothenburg)
Everything being well, I should finally be able to book my Gothenburg tickets and trip tonight. Got a reply from Ticnet which was positive, although I was out last night and when I tried to make a late-night booking their site was closed. Thanks for all your messages of support, I also received a very helpful email from someone who's doing the very same thing I'm doing.
Once again...thank you all, much appreciated.
More news tonight (hopefully).

Countdown to "Astronaut"!
Yes it's that time again when we count down to the release of Salem's second album.
4 WEEKS TO GO!!!!!
I've also got some news which should make Norwegian fans happy. According to EMI Norway, the album will be released in Norway on 23 March (see http://emi.no/nyheter/2009/februar/nytt_album_fra_supersvensken_salem.aspx), this will be preceded by the "Astronaut" single which will be released on 23 February (http://www.emi.no/utgivelser/salem/astronaut_-_single.aspx)
I remember "This Is Who I Am" being released in Norway around the end of 2007 so it's good to see the follow-up getting a quick release.
I don't have any news about an international release (apart from Sweden/Norway as yet) but I'm sure this will happen at some time - if anyone has any news please leave your comments here.

No news yet about my Gothenburg tickets.
Sorry if I go on and on about this, I know you all visit this blog to know about what Salem is up to rather than what I'm up to, but I need to get this out of my system.
I know it's only been a few days, but I still haven't had a reply back from Ticnet about arrangements for collection of the Trädgår'n (Gothenburg) tickets. I will get in touch with them again before the end of the week and if I don't receive a reply then I may just have to give up on the idea of going over to see Salem play live this time :( even though this was and probably will be the best chance I'll get to see Salem play a concert in his own country, in front of his own fans - the people who know, love and appreciate his music most of all.
This is the fourth time I have attempted to see Salem live - I tried to get to Gothenburg in 2007 and 2008, also to Stockholm in 2008 but there were other reasons why I couldn't go.
This time it's different - it's a good time of year, I can get time off work, there are flights available from my local airport and hotels available, so you can understand why I feel frustrated that I can't go ahead, even though tickets are available I may not be able to get them. (Even though I run Salem's international fansite!!)
Salem - if you are reading this, then I'm sure you will understand that (as I'm your unofficial international blogger), I really want to see you play live so that I can then tell the world all about it on Planet Salem.
Hopefully I will have good news to report soon, sorry I'm feeling a little down about this tonight :(( In the words of Salem himself, "I wanna thank you all for listening".
On the bright side, tomorrow is Wednesday so that means "Countdown to Astronaut" time again, and I'm getting more and more excited as the weeks go on.

Another new look for Salem's MySpace
Salem has redesigned his MySpace site www.myspace.com/salem, it's now in a pale-grey colour scheme with his name written in the typeface used on the "Astronaut" single and album.
"Astronaut" has already had over 1000 plays at Salem's MySpace so if you haven't heard it yet then you should go over there and have a listen, I promise you will like it so much that you will want to hear it again and again. :)

The waiting game
I'm still hoping that I can get this Gothenburg ticket issue resolved very soon, so that I can go to see Salem's concert.
I wonder if I'll hear anything today? I won't be able to find out until tonight as I'm at work and won't be able to get access to my email till I get home. I'm getting quite impatient as I need to find out one way or another!!
EDIT 15.02.09: No news yet, I'm afraid .... :(
Maybe tomorrow?

Album cover!
Here is the album cover for "Astronaut" which I finally found at http://www.ginza.se/ and http://www.cdon.com/. I said in an earlier comments thread that I didn't really like the single cover, but the album cover is better, and still quite "mysterious" don't you think?
Couple of questions now -
1. I wonder what other tracks will be on the "Astronaut" single?
2. Does anyone know when the album tracklisting will be available? Maybe within the next couple of weeks?

Gothenburg: good news, bad news
Today I had finally hoped to book my tickets, flights and hotel to come over to see Salem's concert at Trädgår'n in Gothenburg in April.
There is one more problem though. I went onto Ticnet to book my tickets - I know they offer an e-ticket option for some concerts, but it wasn't available for this one, and the only option available was to collect the tickets from a ticket agent in Gothenburg. I don't know if you'd still be able to collect them on the actual day of the concert as I won't get to the ticket agent till then. (And you can't collect the tickets from the venue)
I've emailed Ticnet to clarify this and to ask if there are any other options available, and I'm waiting on a reply from them. Hopefully it won't take too long for them to get back to me so that I can book the tickets and then get the flights and hotel booked. (I only hope that the flights don't sell out too soon).
I was feeling really optimistic last night/this morning about finally getting over to Sweden to see Salem play live, but this has been a further setback and I can see it all going wrong yet again :(

New great adventures waiting shortly...
...hopefully I should have some big (personal) news tomorrow: anyone who's been following this blog in recent weeks should have an idea what it's about, but I'm not saying anything till it's confirmed.

Found a new picture of Salem.
If you go to http://lestudiosthlm.blogspot.com/2009/02/salem-al-fakir.html you'll see a nice new photo of Salem, with yet another new look... The blog post also mentions that there will be more to follow in a forthcoming issue of Damernas Värld magazine.

Release date confusion?
I've just checked over at CDON and they've got the release date for "Astronaut" as 18th March - not 25th March! Has it been brought forward?? Does anyone know? (in which case my countdown will be wrong and it would only be five weeks to go.....!) Can someone tell me? (tell me, tell me, tell me, tell me....sorry!!)
It looks as if the proposed release date for the "Astronaut" single meantime is 4th March, again not confirmed though.
EDIT: Thanks for the info: "Astronaut" is now out on 18th March.

Countdown to "Astronaut"
Yes it's Wednesday and that means our weekly countdown till the release of "Astronaut"....
SIX WEEKS TO GO!!
EDIT 12.02.09: Even better news, it's only....FIVE WEEKS TO GO!! Release date has now been brought forward to 18.03.09. (I don't even think I can wait that long =)))
This week's news: as mentioned in comments in the previous post, Salem will be appearing in the new Swedish television live music show "Rockcirkus" on 4th March. The show will be available to watch on the internet. I'll mention it again on here nearer the time.
On a more personal note, there is still a very small (but significant) chance that I can get over to Sweden in April to see Salem play live in Gothenburg: only circumstances beyond my control are stopping me at the moment, and there is equally a big chance that it's not going to work out. I hope that this will all be resolved in the next couple of weeks, in which case I'm just hoping that the flights and the concert tickets still be available! It really would be a dream come true if it works out. :)))

A message for Salem!
Salem - I have just read the message on your MySpace, where you wondered what had happened to Planet Salem...well don't worry, I'm still here :)))
I didn't write anything for a week as there was no news, but that's changed over the last few days, with the radio appearance and the world premiere of "Astronaut" so I just had to write about that. What a fantastic song by the way, and I can't wait for the album. I'm going to be very busy with this site when the album is released.
Planet Salem continues to go from strength to strength and it now has visitors from all over the world. I hope that you continue to enjoy what you read on this blog: it certainly gives me a lot of enjoyment to write about you and your music.
(I'd also like to thank my "helpers" from Sweden who give me any information which I might not know about - it's much appreciated).
Once again, thank you Salem for supporting this site!! X

And I'm still in the middle
So we had the world premiere of "Astronaut" on Swedish Radio P3's "Morgonpasset" on Friday. Wonderful, I think you will all agree????
Well done Salem. I have this on repeat (via P3) at the moment: we've been familiar with this song over the last couple of months since it was performed at the Guldgalan press conference/"Oh No It's Christmas"/Berwaldhallen but it's great to hear the final, recorded version of the song which is so beautiful......
Edit 08.02.09: I'm listening again (link in previous post) and I just love the way the song starts off with the acoustic guitar and then the keyboards come in, I love the echo on Salem's voice and the sparse, spacey production. And most of all I love that little bit in the middle when it stops, then there is a drumbeat and then "she left him to be with me...." and the strings come in and the harmonies and awww....how gorgeous is this song?
You will have to forgive me if I get a bit excitable over the coming weeks!!

Radio appearance today - did you hear it?
As I said in my earlier post I wasn't able to hear Salem live on Morgonpasset today, but I will check it out this weekend.
If you heard the show why not tell us what you think and leave a comment. I'd also appreciate if someone could translate what he said in his interview.
Thanks!
Edit 08.02.09: there's a couple of clips been posted at YouTube (by P3). At http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=lq4Hk_8xsy8 you can see Salem fooling around in the studio and being swept off his feet - literally - by one of the presenters.
I thought it was really funny when he tried to lift her up and throw her over his shoulder, only to realise it wasn't going to be so easy :))
Now there's a thought - getting carried away by Salem - what a very lucky lady!! :))))
There is also a clip at http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=D-1OlPCxy08 with Salem and the presenter doing a silly little song. And some body contact!
You can also listen to Friday's Morgonpasset show at http://www.sr.se/sida/Sandningsarkiv.aspx?ProgramID=2024 click on the link to Friday 6 February's show. It's split into 6 parts, just go to the end of each one until you reach part 6 where you can find the interview with Salem, and the world premiere of "Astronaut" is about 11 minutes in. You will not be disappointed!

The countdown is on!
It's the "calm before the storm" just now, I expect Salem is rehearsing for the tour and getting ready for all the promotional appearances and events around the release of the album.
So, as there is no news at the moment I thought I'd begin my weekly countdown till the release of "Astronaut".
SEVEN WEEKS TO GO!!!
If anyone out there finds out about any forthcoming Swedish TV/radio appearances please let me know - I wonder what TV shows he will be appearing on to promote the album? I notice there's a new live music show on SVT called "Popcirkus" which I've been watching on the internet. I'd love to see Salem appearing on that show soon.
EDIT 05.02.09: If you haven't read the comments for this post, then here's a reminder that Salem will be on Swedish Radio P3's "Morgonpasset" tomorrow (Friday) morning and playing his new single. I'll be checking it out later and I'll do a separate post about this.

Salem at the Rockbjörnen
Well, did you see it?
Salem was fantastic on the Rockbjörnen tonight, when he sang "It's Only You Part II". He was on about 10 minutes ago, I hope they post this performance on Aftonbladet's website at some point as I need to watch it again (and this would be good for anyone who missed tonight).
He was in great voice too, and when he sang the last "It's only you I think about" in a higher register than usual towards the end of the song I just melted!!!!!
Salem was dressed in a big raincoat, and I thought his hair was rather nice tonight - in fact he looked lovely, well as lovely as a man in a big raincoat could look. :)))
A delightful comeback - great to see Salem and his band back on stage again.
But just one question - where is Gunnar? I didn't see him on stage tonight and he didn't play at Berwaldhallen either. Has he left the band or was there another reason why he wasn't there? Does anyone know?
EDIT 23.01.09: Link to video: http://www.aftonbladet.se/webbtv/noje/rockbjornen/article4245533.ab unfortunately I can't watch this as I'm at work at the moment and the link is blocked, but I'll watch it tonight. And tomorrow. Probably about 50 times tomorrow :))))))

Rockbjörnen tomorrow
As you will probably know, Salem is one of the artists appearing on the Aftonbladet Rockbjörnen awards ceremony which takes place tomorrow - Thursday 22.01.09 - at Cirkus in Stockholm. The event will be broadcast live on the internet at http://www.aftonbladet.se/ - more information at http://www.aftonbladet.se/nojesbladet/musik/rockbjornen2008/article4179750.ab. Of course I'll be watching it!!

Question about concert tickets?
I was just wondering about something tonight. If I was able to come over to Sweden to see one of Salem's concerts, I'm trying to find out what would be the best option to buy tickets. I've checked www.ticnet.se - is this a reliable site for buying tickets online?
I have another question for Gothenburg readers - how many people does Trädgår'n hold? Is it a very large venue?
I'm still trying to find a way to get over to Sweden to see Salem play live in April (although I don't think I'll make it and the chances of this are still very small!)

Can anyone help with this request?
One of our readers has contacted me to ask where they could purchase the sheet music notes for Salem's songs. As I don't live in Sweden I'm not sure if these are available or not, so would any of you be able to help and advise if these are available to buy from any shops or websites?
Thanks!
Thanks!

The 200th Post!!
Time flies when you're having fun, I didn't realise that I had written as many posts over the past year but one thing's for sure, there will be many, many more this year. :))
Now that we know the album is on its way, I decided to play a little prediction game to predict the tracks that would be included on the album, based on the songs which have been played live over the past year or so. Remember this is only a game, no-one knows the tracklisting for the album yet so I've probably got some of these wrong, but it's only a bit of fun to celebrate my 200th post!
Here's what I think will be on the album:
It's Only You Part II
The Astronaut
Someday
Twelve Fingers
Black Sun Black Moon
Beautiful
Emperor
Mirror
One of the Others
Purple Lady
Seven Steps Ahead
Don't know what will happen with "Japanese Man" as it was played live in 2007 but seems to have disappeared.
If anyone knows anything about the tracklisting, let me know either via comments or email!
Tack!

Dear Salem, can we please have a live DVD soon?
Whilst I’m delighted about the news of Salem’s Swedish tour, I regret that I won’t be able to get over to Sweden for any of the shows this year due to financial/practical/transport/work/other reasons.
I’m sure that there are many of Salem’s growing audience of international fans who, like myself, would love to see Salem live but can’t make it over to Sweden.
Therefore, I think it would be a great idea if Salem released a live DVD, recorded at one (or more) of his forthcoming concerts.
Salem - if you or any of your people are reading this, can we have a live DVD soon?
It’s still my dream to see Salem play live one day: hopefully that dream will eventually come true.

New album out March 25!!
I am so excited tonight I can't put it into words!!!!!!
It was announced today that Salem's new album will be out on March 25, which is only 9 weeks and 6 days from today. It will be called "Astronaut".
There are various articles about this on the internet today, I won't list them all but if you do a search on Sesam or Google you should find some.
http://plaskis.se/wp/2009/01/15/salem-al-fakir-slapper-uppfoljaren-till-succedebuten/ has a short interview with Salem, in which he wonders how people will react to the album, as his music has become a little more thoughtful. Whilst he has written, recorded and produced this album himself, he has also involved a few friends this time. Salem is also looking forward to his spring tour of Sweden and playing the new songs live. It was also confirmed in this feature that "It's Only You Part II" will be on the new album.

New concerts announced, and Salem to appear live at Rockbjörnen
As a couple of our readers highlighted in their comments on the previous post (thanks!!!), two new concerts have been announced for Salem's April tour of Sweden.
Thursday 16.04.09: Cirkus, Stockholm
Saturday 18.04.09: Trädgår'n, Gothenburg.
Aftonbladet has announced today that Salem will be playing live at the Rockbjornen gala on 22.01.09. Other acts in the line-up include Titiyo, Lisa Miskovsky, Ola, Melody Club, Lykke Li and Soundtrack Of Our Lives. I watched last year's show on the internet and hopefully Aftonbladet TV will be webcasting this again.

Salem in Östersund in April
Salem will be appearing at the Gamla Teatern in Östersund on 24th April.
List of concerts announced so far:
17.04.09 Uppsala
24.04.09 Östersund
25.04.09 Sundsvall
I'm just wondering today....
Will more dates in Sweden be announced?
Will Salem be playing some festivals in Sweden during the summer?
Will Salem be playing any concerts outside Sweden this year?
When's the album out?
If anyone knows the answers to any of these, let me know! (If you don't want to leave a comment, feel free to email me, this will remain confidential and won't be published here).

New-look Salem at last night's Grammisgalan: think 1920s king-of-swing
Last night I was trying to find pictures/video of Salem at last night's Grammisgalan but couldn't find anything. TV4's site didn't seem to work for me and there was nothing on YouTube either.
Tonight I've finally tracked down Salem and his new look: dare I say 1920s king-of-swing? Salem presented Anna Ternheim with the best album award (clip at TV4's website, http://www.tv4.se/1.283438?videoId=1.797857&renderingdepartment=2.757) whilst YouTube also has a clip of Robyn and the Supreme Court Allstars - featuring Salem on keyboards - wonderfully performing "Dream On" last night.

Other blogs talking about Salem...
I thought I'd mention a couple of excellent blog posts which both had some really nice things to say about Salem and his music.
Poster Girl has "It's Only You Part II" in her chart rundown of songs from 2008: http://poppostergirl.blogspot.com/2009/01/75-salem-al-fakir-its-only-you-part-ii.html
Don't Stop The Pop has Salem as one of his 'Arrivals of the Year' in his review of 2008: http://dontstopthepop.blogspot.com/2009/01/dont-stop-pops-reflections-of-music.html

Link to P4 Berwaldhallen concert
I've just been over to Salem's MySpace for my daily visit - thanks Marty for your lovely comments! I just realised I hadn't posted the direct link to Salem's P4 concert, so I thought I'd make it easier to find, for anyone who's not really familiar with the Swedish language.
It's at http://www.sr.se/cgi-bin/p4/programsidor/artikel.asp?ProgramID=2111&Artikel=2513054 then click link at the left hand side of the page at 'P4:s Jul och Nyårprogram'.
Edit 31.01.09: Sadly this has now been removed from SR's website as the 30 day archive limit has now expired :(

Salem to present an award at the Grammisgalan
If you remember, I'd been wondering the other day if Salem would be presenting an award at the Grammisgalan - well yes, he will be! Expressen reports today that Salem will be presenting this year's award for Best Album.

Some screencaps - P3 Guldgalan press conference
You can still see video of Salem's performance at the P3 Guldgalan press conference at http://www.sr.se/P3/diverse/AppData/P3live/video/P3GuldPk-20081203-Salem.asx, I'm not sure how long this will be available for, so enjoy it while you can!!
I took the opportunity to make some of my (fuzzy) screencaps on the computer and here are a couple of them!
I'm sure there will be some new (official) photos of Salem soon!! Now, all we need to know is...when's the album out? Salem is playing two shows in April, which would suggest that it would be around that time but we don't know for sure. The first half of the year would be nice :)))))

Hottest artists of 2009 poll - Aftonbladet
Aftonbladet has published the results of a poll carried out among record companies about whom they thought would be Sweden's hottest artists in the coming year.
Lars Winnerbäck topped the poll (I still can't understand his appeal, IMHO) followed by Håkan Hellström.
Salem was in joint-seventh place along with Lykke Li, Markus Krunegård and a few others.
Of course if we had a poll on this site, Salem would be the hottest artist of any year!!

Salem to appear at the Grammisgalan
Swedish news agency TT Spektra reports that Salem will be appearing at this week's Grammisgalan as part of the Supreme Court Allstars, a "supergroup" of 16 well-known Swedish artists backing Robyn and Christian Falk, who will perform "Dream On". This will be played as a tribute to Swedish jazz musicians Esbjörn Svensson and Arne Domnérus who died in 2008.
Salem to play in Uppsala in April 2009
Salem will be playing the Katalin jazzclub in Uppsala on Friday 17th April.

Grammis 2009
Does anyone know if Salem will be presenting any awards at the Grammis 2009 show next week? Just wondering!

A great start to 2009...!
Well...did you hear Salem's concert on P4 on New Year's Day? (If you didn't or if you want to hear it again and again - as I do - you can find it at www.sr.se/p4 ).
Song list:
Begin
This Is Who I Am
Good Song
Dream Girl
It's Only You Part II
Damien and Bob
Purple Lady (not sure if this is the song title?)
The Astronaut
One of the Others
Twelve Fingers
If any of you were at any of the Berwaldhallen concerts, can you let me know if Salem did any more songs which weren't broadcast on P4? (I know that "Tell Me" was one of them, as this was mentioned in the Svenska Dagbladet review). I got the feeling that it was an edited version of the show. Not that there was anything wrong with the Swedish Radio Orchestra's interludes and Anders Widmark's solo pieces, but given the choice I would rather have heard more of Salem's songs in this radio broadcast.
It all started with "Begin" appropriately, as a nice overture to the show, which ran smoothly into "This Is Who I Am" which was probably one of the most successful songs with the orchestral backing.
I think there may have been another song between this and "Good Song" as Swedish radio didn't do a very good job of the editing here!!
Of course you all know that "Good Song" is my favourite Salem song but I will be honest and say that I've heard better live versions of this, Salem sang well but was a little drowned out at times by the occasionally messy musical arrangement which (IMHO) didn't do the song justice.
"Dream Girl" next, which is still an utterly enchanting song. Salem's voice is getting better and better, stronger and more expressive whilst retaining that sensitivity which makes his voice so distinctive. I thought this was great with the orchestra as the arrangement was both grand and restrained at the same time.
Next was "It's Only You Part II" where the sparkling synth-pop of the recorded version was swapped for an equally sparkling orchestral backdrop. I didn't think this was going to work....but it did.
"Damien and Bob" as you know is probably one of my least favourite Salem songs but I've learned to live with it and did go through a brief period when I began to like it then didn't like it again....anyway I haven't really changed my mind here. I thought this was a bit of a mess with the orchestra, but it was interesting to hear him sing it anyway.
Then a complete contrast and a new song I hadn't heard before so I don't know if I've got the title right - "Purple Lady". I can only describe this as being very close in musical spirit to "Hymn" and has the same childlike, lullaby quality. Incredibly pretty.
"The Astronaut" is already popular with Salem fans and was the only song of the night where Salem didn't use the orchestra but instead just sang and played this on acoustic guitar. I like this song a lot and have listened to it so many times that it's like an old favourite now.
I think there may have been more editing at this point as it went straight into "It's True", a timeless song which seems to work in any version - whether the piano-based original or Axwell's dance mix, so add yet another great version to the list - I thought this was perfect with the orchestral backing, particularly the string arrangements - and Salem also sang this perfectly.
And then it was time for my favourite new Salem song - "One of the Others" which I'd previously heard on a YouTube phone-video and declared my total, complete and absolute love for this song. After today I love it even more. Salem is becoming an even more talented lyricist than he was before - the lyrics on this are very clever indeed. Everything about this was perfect - the orchestral arrangement was fabulous and really suited the song. Please excuse me for going over the top, but ....well, I just love this song and I can't wait till it's on the album!! At which time I will probably wear out the CD!!
Last but not least, "Twelve Fingers" which brought the concert to a lively and grand conclusion. Once again, the orchestral backing really suited this song.
A brilliant show which proved (what we already know) that Salem is a fantastic singer, musician and performer.
